apologize for the inconvenience this might cause.
However, we will continue to send
emails about events and openings through our email address, book_ideas@hotmail.com. Please don't
hesitate to get in touch with us and/or request to be added to our mailing
list!

Nao, who spoke at Book Ideas about "African cooking" in 2010, recently returned to Japan from Nigeria. She will be sharing her experiences of that country with us and open to taking questions about her life there!
Birgit will read the Shel Silverstein classic, "The Giving Tree" and Akiko Hishiyama will read two different Japanese translations of the same book.
They will also read a Japanese version and an English translation of “Issunboshi”.
If you are interested in practicing your English or Japanese comprehension, or in comparing how the same story and its message are conveyed in different languages and translations, please join us for this special event.
After adding almost 200 new titles, there are now 2,907 books and other media in our library! We have also added a new category: "Graded Readers".
Please click on the link called "Complete Book List (updated January 1, 2017)" under the "Important Pages" tab on the right-hand side of the screen to browse the collection. The list is organized alphabetically by author and by category. We will be updating the list regularly.
Thank you to everyone who attended our "Christmas Cheer" event on Friday, December 23!
Every year we celebrate German Christmas with a real tree, ornaments and decorations, and traditional treats. It was a great opportunity to get together and learn more about the holiday and each other.
Book Ideas is now closed for Winter Break.
Our first opening after the break will be on Saturday, January 7, 2017
The first Crafting Circle after the break will be on Wednesday, January 11, 2017

Since we began 14 years ago, the mobile lending library and community service project we called “Book Ideas” has been an opportunity to bring books collected from all over the world to curious readers, connect with neighbors and make friends, share experiences from home and abroad, and find my own feet in Tokyo.
We imagined Book Ideas as a space for discovery and special encounters. With Kaffeehaus we aim to maintain this atmosphere, while resituating it within a café setting where we also serve coffee and German baked goods. Our book library remains with books old and new, in every imaginable size, on many different topics and in many different languages. As does our varied program of regular events, presentations, and meet-ups like “Crafting Circle”.
Kaffeehaus draws inspiration from the traditional Viennese Coffee House, which the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig describes as “a sort of democratic club, open to everyone for the price of a cheap cup of coffee, where every guest can sit for hours with this little offering, to talk, write, play cards, receive post, and above all consume an unlimited number of newspapers and journals.”
In the same spirit, we would like to think that Kaffeehaus is for everyone: whether you are a bookworm, a conversationalist, or a parent with kids; whether you are looking for a peaceful garden in which to read and drink coffee; or whether you are simply a person who is curious about other people, countries, and lifestyles.
